The LEAP Program

The LEAP Program, which stands for Lift, Educate, Advocate, and Proclaim, is a direct services program dedicated to improving the quality of life of underpriviledged women living in the Roanoke Valley.

The program comprehensively addresses the critical issues and obstacles facing individuals whose families have a multi-generational history of living in poverty. In conjunction with licensed counselors, dedicated Foundation staff, and local volunteers specializing in the fields of education, beauty, finance, and advocacy, participant change their lives by:

  1. Challenging accepted beliefs that lead to hopelessness
  2. Building self-esteem and confidence
  3. Enhancing exposure to opportunities
  4. Addressing physical and mental health issues
  5. Creating real relationship with advocates and mentors who serve as encouraging guides

To date, 21 participants have been accepted into the program. All of the participants have developed step-by-step life plans, designed to engage them in creating permanent change in their life. Many of the career goals of these individuals focus on attaining their GED, returning to college, or entering into vocational training. With the encouragement and guidance of staff and volunteers, these individuals are able to implement their own designs for self-improvement while developing positive relationships with one another, and building their self-esteem and skill set.

The skill building aspect of the program revolves around the Charity Cottage project, where participants learn to produce, market, sell, and manage the operations of the Cottage. These women come together to create artistic, hand-made baby dolls, and in doing so, begin to build their self-esteem and their social circles. All proceeds from the doll sales are funneled back into the program to help future participants.

“The LEAP Program has given me a new outlook on life. When I first got into the LEAP program I didn't have my mind set on what I wanted to do in life. Now that I am in the program, I have identified the goals that I have for myself and my family. I used to think that I was a nobody and I let people walk over me like I was their doormat. But now I'm enrolled in the Culinary Program at Virginia Western Community College and I have changed my attitude. I am working for a better life for me and my family.”    ~ Anne M. Meador
